 How a Farm Share works

A Farm Share is a way to become a “member” of a farm and get a share of that farm’s harvest each week of the growing season.  Becoming a farm share member is great both for families who get fresh produce at a good value, and for farmers who have consistent customers and a money stream they can count on.

The Farm Share model was first developed in the south in the 1960s by Booker T. Whatley, a Black horticulturist, agriculture professor, and activist.  He created a model of community membership clubs to support Black farmers who were excluded from loans due to racist policies and lenders.  Members would pay for a season in advance to give farms the financial support they needed early in the season. This model became known as “Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)” or what we call a Farm Share.

Nordica Street Community Farm Share members get a selection of what is abundant and fresh on the farm each week from mid-June through October.  Share members must commit to the entire season.

Members can pay for the season in advance or monthly or weekly.  Pick-ups are on Tuesdays at the farm from 2 - 6 pm. We also offer delivery for an additional charge.

There may be items in your share that are unfamiliar to you. Our community is diverse, and we grow food that reflects that diversity. Your share might contain food you have not cooked yet. You can go for it or leave it in the swap box for another family. Check out our blog for recipes. (coming in the future)

To keep our prices reasonable, we may ask you to help with items in your share. This might include cutting your own flowers, harvesting the fresh herbs you want, or weighing out your portion of green beans. This cuts down on our labor costs and allows you to interact more with the farm.

Sign ups generally happen in late winter and spring.  We produce enough food for 20 shares - spaces are limited and fill up quickly.  Email us at nordicastreetcf@gmail.com if you would like to get on the waiting list!

What's in a Share?

Generally each share will include 6 - 10  items such as seasonal greens (for example, kale, swiss chard, bok choy, collards), a bag of mixed salad greens or a head of lettuce, fresh herbs, onions of some kind or garlic as available, and a variety of vegetables.

The vegetable selection over the course of the summer season will include items such as zucchini, summer squash, beets, radishes, cucumbers, cabbage, tomatoes, eggplant, sweet and hot peppers, carrots, leeks, and potatoes according to what is abundant that week.  In the fall we have sweet potatoes and winter squashes, as well as .pears and apples.

We also occasionally include cut flowers (often pick your own) and other items grown by local farms. Share members may also buy additional items that are not part of the share.

Joining a farm share means that you are committing to the rewards and risks inherent in farming.  We cannot guarantee any crop - mother nature will have a big say in how the season unfolds. We are committed to providing you with a delicious, nutritious, and very fresh selection of vegetables that will nurture your body and spirit!
